How to Measure Eyelet Curtains
To measure eyelet curtains, you are going to need a metal tape measure, pen and paper. Similar to below.
Step 1 – Double check height of pole is correct
Before you begin measuring it is a good idea to double check that your pole is in the correct position. We would recommend the pole is 4 – 5 inches or approx 12 cm above the window recess. See below:
This is because if the pole is lower , day light can easily pass through the bottom of the eyelets and does not look very nice. If you live in a cottage and have low ceilings with only a few inches above the window. A curtain track and a pelmet would be a neater solution
This means that when you draw your curtains they are pulled to the side of the window and look good.
If your pole is the same width as the window, this means that when you draw the curtains they block out all the light and look terrible. So You need to double check this and if the pole is not wide enough, you will need to order a wider pole before taking your measurements
Step 3 – Double check for obstacles – Such as Radiators
Before you think about measuring the height of the curtains, double check where the radiators are. You need to make sure the curtains are at least 1 inches above the radiators for clearance. If this is for a bedroom the curtains would finish between the window sill and the radiators. Generally approx. 15 cm below the window sill but this may be slightly less depending on if your radiators are in the way. See below:
4. Now take your measurement for the eyelet curtains height.
For the height there is 3 cm above the top of the pole to where the eyelet curtain finishes.
So you need to measure from where you would the bottom of curtains to finish to the top of the pole and then add on 3 cm. So for example :
Bottom of curtain too top of curtain pole = 130cm + 3cm = 133cm Eyelet Curtain Height
If your eyelet curtains are full length and would like them to hang slightly above the floor.
You need to measure 1cm above the floor then too the top of the pole and then add on 3cm.
5. Now take the measurement for the curtain width
You need to measure from inside the finial which is the decorative piece on the end to the inside of the finial on the other side. See below
Frequently Asked Questions(FAQ)
1. How do I know what size eyelet curtains too buy?
In ready made curtains eyelet curtains are sold in a pair and come in 3 different widths , Pair 46 inch wide , Pair 66 inch wide, Pair 90 inch wide.
Pair 46 inch wide – Pole width up to 46 inches ( At Least Double Gather)
- Pole width up to 61 inches (1.5 Gather)
Pair 66 inch wide – Pole width 46 to 66 inches (at Least Double Gather)
- Pole width up to 88 inches (1.5 Gather)
Pair 90 inch wide – Pole width 66 to 90 inches (at Least Double Gather)
- Pole width up to 120 inches ( 1.5 gather)
2. Should eyelet curtains be double width ?
This is personal taste. We would recommend double because they look much nicer and there will be more folds in the fabric when they are drawn closed. However you can still have a minimum of 1.5 times the pole width .
3. How much fullness do eyelet curtains need ?
Ideally we would recommend at least double gather so you have plently of folds in fabric when they are closed
4. Are curtains measured from the eyelet or the top ?
We measure our eyelet curtains to the top of the curtain. Which is 3cm above the pole. So measure from where you would like the curtains to finish to the top of the pole and then add on 3 cm.
Bottom of curtain too top of curtain pole = 130cm + 3cm = 133cm Eyelet Curtain Height
5. What diameter curtain pole do I need ?
All of our readymade eyelet curtains have a 40mm eyelet, therefore we would recommend a 28mm curtain pole diameter. A 35mm pole may also fit but your eyelets may not move very smoothly. A larger 50mm eyelet would be recommended if you would like a 35mm diameter curtain pole
